What is VAT Filing in the UAE?

VAT filing is the process of submitting a tax return to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) through its official online portal.

The return reports your business activity for the tax period and calculates the net VAT you owe or can reclaim.

Penalties

What non-compliance costs you

ViolationPenaltyHow Capella helps
Failure to file the VAT return by the deadline (28 days after the tax period ends)AED 1,000 for the first offence, and AED 2,000 if repeated within 24 monthsCapella tracks every tax period and files your VAT 201 on EmaraTax well before the 28-day deadline, so a late-filing fine never applies.
Failure to pay the VAT due by the payment deadlineA monthly late-payment penalty of 14% per annum on the unpaid tax, for each month or part thereof it remains outstanding (Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025, effective 14 April 2026)We calculate your exact net VAT payable early and remind you ahead of the deadline so payment clears on time and interest never accrues.
Submitting an incorrect return and correcting it via Voluntary DisclosureA monthly penalty of 1% of the tax difference for each month from the original due date until the disclosure is made (Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025)Our agent review catches errors before submission; if a past mistake surfaces, we prepare and file the Voluntary Disclosure quickly to keep the monthly penalty to a minimum.
Error identified by the FTA after a tax audit notificationA fixed 15% penalty on the tax difference, plus 1% per month from the due date (Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025)Accurate, agent-reviewed returns and clean records mean audits rarely turn up adjustments. We also represent you directly with the FTA as your registered tax agent.
Failure to apply for VAT deregistration within 20 business days of becoming eligibleAED 1,000 on the due date and AED 1,000 for each subsequent month, capped at AED 10,000When your business no longer meets the threshold, we monitor eligibility and file the deregistration application on EmaraTax inside the 20-business-day window.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Any business registered for VAT with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) must file returns, which is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 per year (voluntary registration is allowed above AED 187,500).

Most businesses file quarterly, though the FTA assigns some larger businesses a monthly period, and the return and payment are both due by the 28th day of the month following the end of each tax period.

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, while certain supplies such as exports outside the GCC and qualifying healthcare and education are zero-rated, and some items like specific financial services and residential property are exempt.

You need your tax invoices for sales and purchases, records of imports and exports, credit/debit notes, and a summary of output VAT collected and input VAT paid, all filed online through the FTA's EmaraTax portal.

The FTA imposes a penalty of AED 1,000 for a first late filing (AED 2,000 if repeated within 24 months), plus late-payment penalties that accrue as a percentage of the unpaid tax over time, so timely and accurate filing is essential.
